Some Things You Probably Don't Know About Hyenas, Find Out Here!!!

If you need a definition of cowardice, hyenas have it. Despite their reputation of being cowardly animals, they can be really aggressive and dangerous. On today's Nature and Wildlife, we will dish out some things you need to know about hyenas.

1)There are 4 different species of hyenas. There's the aardwolf, the brown hyena, the stripped hyena and the spotted hyena.

2)Though hyenas have a reputation of being cowardly scavengers but  95% of their meals come from hunting.

3)Hyenas have extremely powerful digestive system. These animals are capable of digesting bones, skin and waste of animals.

4)One of the most dangerous sounds you might hear in the bush is a laughter by a hyena. Hyenas laugh to inform other members of the pack that it has found food.

5)It might interest you to know that 'female' hyenas have 'penis' which is an elongated clitoris. That doesn't mean they are hermaphrodites.

6)The penis of a female hyena is used for copulation, urination and birth. This is bizarre!

7)In the world of hyenas, whenever a male reaches sexual maturity, he is forced to leave his family. Males join new packs after winning a fight with the alpha male in that pack.

8)Species like the stripped hyena would pretend to be dead when attacked by dogs or lions. Is that an act of cowardice or intelligence?

9)Hyenas mark their territory with a white dropping produced in their anal gland. The strong smell of the substance informs other hyenas that territory is already occupied.

10)The cub of hyenas are not actually siblings when survival is concerned. They can fight to death just to achieve best feeding position. The mother only watches.
