The Graduate Research School oversees graduate research study at the University of Otago. We provide policy advice for doctoral and research Masters’ degrees, have oversight of all administrative matters related to the PhD programme, provide targeted support for Māori postgraduates.
University of Otago also has a Graduate Wellbeing Coach to support postgraduate study, have oversight of postgraduate researcher and supervisor development, and work with the University community to enhance the graduate research culture.

Otago offers research Master’s scholarships to support students during the thesis part of a research Master’s degree (pre-thesis papers are not covered by these scholarships), or those studying for a coursework Master’s that does not have a thesis component.

Scholarship Requirements
The University of Otago International Research Master’s Scholarship provides funding to support international Master’s students studying at the University of Otago.
Applicants must be:
obtaining their first Master’s qualification
international students
undertaking a thesis-based Master’s
Selection is based predominantly on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research.
Scholarship Duration and Reward
The AUT International Scholarships 2022 in New Zealand are divided into the following categories:
Masters Degree:
NZ$15,000 Stipend per Annum
Domestic Tuition Fees waiver (excludes student services fee and insurance)
PhD Degre:
NZ$27,000 stipend per annum
Domestic tuition fees waiver for 36 months (excludes student services fee and insurance)
