A prominent member of the opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has provided a condition under which he would relinquish his presidential ambition for the 2027 election in favor of a younger candidate.
He made clear his readiness to abandon his bid should a young, vibrant, and acceptable candidate emerge within the ADC.
In an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, the former Vice President emphasized that his involvement in the 2027 race is not about satisfying personal desires, but about offering Nigerians a credible alternative and rescuing the country.
Atiku urged younger Nigerians to become actively involved in politics, affirming that if one of them is selected to run for the presidency, he would fully support them.
He dismissed allegations that he is desperate for the presidency, stating that his concern is rescuing Nigeria from those who have “held it hostage.”
“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” Atiku said.
