"We Have Not Seen the Lookman of Old,” Ikpeba Laments After Gabon Win

Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has expressed his views on Ademola Lookman’s recent performances for the national team, particularly after Nigeria’s emphatic 4-1 win over Gabon.

Despite Lookman being the reigning African Footballer of the Year, he struggled to make a major impact in the match against Gabon. In the 4-4-2 setup, he started alongside Chukwueze, but both were substituted around the 60-minute mark after failing to influence the game significantly.

Chukwueze was replaced by Chidera Ejuke, while Moses Simon took over Lookman’s role on the field.

Ikpeba pointed out that part of Lookman’s struggles may stem from a lack of match sharpness, noting that the winger missed the beginning of the season due to transfer complications.

“I will like to see more from Lookman, we have not seen the Lookman of old,” Ikpeba said on SuperSport.

“We can understand, he’s short of match fitness and that form is not there yet.

“The likes of Chukwueze and Lookman, we need to see more from these two players.”

In a thrilling turn, the Super Eagles only broke through in extra time. Two late goals from Victor Osimhen, coupled with an earlier strike by Chidera Ejuke, sealed the victory over Gabon after full-time ended at 1-1.

Gabon’s Mario Lemina had canceled out Adams Akor’s opener for Nigeria, but Osimhen’s brace secured a convincing result for the Eagles in Rabat.

With this win, Nigeria now faces DR Congo in the final of the World Cup qualifying playoff on Sunday.
