The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has announced the death of its former Vice-Chancellor, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who passed away on Saturday morning after a brief illness. He was 68 years old.
The announcement was made in a press statement issued by the University's Directorate of Corporate Affairs and signed by its Director, Kunle Akogun.
According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, disclosed that Prof. Ambali, who served as the institution's ninth Vice-Chancellor from 2012 to 2017, died earlier on Saturday.
Professor Egbewole described the late academic's passing as a significant loss, not only to the University of Ilorin but also to Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, where he was serving as Pro-Chancellor at the time of his death.
He noted that Prof. Ambali's contributions to education, scholarship, and national development would remain invaluable, adding that his death represents a loss to the nation and humanity at large.
The Vice-Chancellor also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the people of the Ilorin Emirate, and members of the university community.
He urged sympathisers, particularly members of the University of Ilorin community, to attend the Janazah prayer scheduled to hold at the late professor's residence in Oloje Housing Estate, Ilorin, by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Prof. Ambali was widely respected in academic circles for his leadership and contributions to higher education in Nigeria. His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, students, and associates across the country.
