WhatsApp has unveiled a new username feature that enables users to communicate with others without having to disclose their phone numbers, marking another step in the platform's efforts to improve user privacy.
The messaging service, owned by Meta, disclosed that the new functionality will gradually become available to its global community of more than three billion users over the next few months.
Beginning Monday, users can create and reserve their preferred usernames within the application. Although the feature is being introduced to all users, adopting a username will be optional rather than mandatory.
The introduction of usernames allows users to exchange their unique identifiers instead of their personal phone numbers when initiating conversations, offering greater flexibility and control over the information they choose to share.
WhatsApp explained that users will have the freedom to modify or delete their usernames whenever they wish. The company also noted that existing security measures, such as the ability to block or report unwanted contacts, will remain fully operational alongside the new feature.
As part of measures aimed at preventing identity fraud, usernames will be limited to a maximum of 35 characters. They will also be governed by guidelines designed to stop users from impersonating celebrities, public figures, or other well-known personalities.
According to the company, the update is intended to strengthen user privacy by making it possible to communicate with new contacts without exposing personal phone numbers.
