Less Than Two Weeks to Election, EFCC Freezes Osun State Government Account

 The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly placed a restriction on one of the Osun State Government’s bank accounts, less than two weeks before the August 15 governorship election.

According to documents obtained by Insightlinks, the affected account, domiciled with First Bank, was placed on a “Post No Debit” status by the anti-graft agency, preventing any withdrawals or transactions.

The account is said to be one of the state government’s operational accounts reportedly used for the payment of workers’ salaries and other official obligations.

Although the EFCC has yet to publicly explain the reason for the action, the development has sparked political attention because of its timing, coming just days before Osun voters head to the polls to elect their next governor.

The governorship election is expected to be keenly contested, with incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party seeking re-election against major opposition candidates, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO).

As of the time of filing this report, neither the EFCC nor the Osun State Government had issued an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the restriction placed on the account.
