2027: Sowore Promises N500,000 Minimum Wage, Vows to Restore Petrol Subsidy

 

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said he would restore the petrol subsidy abolished by the administration of President Bola Tinubu if he wins the 2027 presidential election.

The activist disclosed this in a post published on his official X handle on Monday.

Sowore also pledged that his administration would introduce a minimum monthly wage of N500,000 for Nigerian workers if elected president.

“Attempts to water down our proposal for a N500,000 monthly living wage with funny statistics will not change our position.

“Under our government, Nigerian workers will earn a minimum wage of at least N500,000 monthly. We will also restore the petrol subsidy.

“Workers deserve wages they can actually live on,” the AAC presidential candidate wrote.

The issue of petrol subsidy removal has continued to generate nationwide debate, with several presidential candidates taking different positions on whether the policy should be reversed ahead of the 2027 election.

Among those who have backed a return of some form of subsidy is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who has promised to restore a subsidy arrangement if elected.

Atiku, however, has proposed a form of subsidy that would be directed at domestic refiners rather than simply returning to the previous arrangement.

Sowore's position differs from that of the presidential candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, who have said they would not restore the old petrol subsidy system if elected.

Makinde has instead proposed reducing the cost of crude supplied to Nigerian refineries as an alternative approach to lowering the price of petrol for consumers.
