Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane has conceded that individual brilliance may not be enough for him to claim the Ballon d’Or if he fails to secure major trophies with his teams.
Speaking in a recent interview with the UK’s Mirror, the England captain acknowledged that even a prolific scoring season may not sway the Ballon d’Or voters if his club and national side don’t win the Champions League or World Cup. “I could score 100 goals this season but if I don’t win the Champions League or the World Cup, you’re probably not going to win the Ballon d’Or,” he said. He went on to draw parallels with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, noting: “It’s the same with Haaland, with any player. You have to be winning those major trophies.”
Kane’s honesty underscores the harsh reality of modern football’s most prestigious individual accolade: team success often outweighs personal achievement. Despite what could be an extraordinary personal goal tally, the Bayern star believes that his Ballon d’Or ambitions hinge on silverware.
