Omoyele Sowore has been nominated and may be awarded the "Prisoner of Conscience Award" by the U.S. House of Representatives ' Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.

The Tom Lantos Commission on Human Rights is charged with the promotion, defense and advocacy of international human rights.

The U.S. representative, Josh Gottheimer, supported the appointment of Sowore. "I have been working closely with the Sowore family, the Haworth group, the State Department, and my colleagues for months now to advocate on behalf of Yele (Omoyele).

"We urge the Nigerian government to protect the welfare of Yele, provide him with the proper process he deserves, and finally allow him to return home as soon as possible.

"We will continue to monitor the situation in Nigeria, a democracy that seeks closer ties with the United States, to ensure that the government respects fundamental human rights."
