Sacked UNILAG VC Ogundipe Blows Hot, Heads To Court

 Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe

Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the University of Lagos's ousted vice-chancellor, has retained a top Nigerian lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, to lodge a lawsuit to contest his removal from office, reports The PUNCH.

His guidance letter dated 12 August 2020 and sent to Ozekhome was seen Thursday by The PUNCH.

In the letter, Ogundipe argued that the act of the University Regulating Council "purposedly removing" him from office was "illegal and unconstitutional," adding that it "was carried out without due process and contrary to the University Act and other relevant laws regulating the supervision, suspension and dismissal of the University Vice-Chancellor.'

His instruction to Ozekhome, carried on his official letterhead, was entitled 'Instruction to take legal action against the Council and Pro-Chancellor and others at Lagos, Akoka, Lagos University.'

It read in part, "I hereby formally subpoena you to launch legal proceedings against the Council, the University of Lagos Pro-Chancellor and others on the grounds of their unlawful and unconstitutional act of allegedly dismissing me from office as the University of Lagos Vice-Chancellor.

"I honestly believe that this activity was carried out without due process and in contravention of the University Act and other relevant laws governing the supervision, suspension and dismissal of the University Vice Chancellor.

"I humbly advise you to use your legal skills to resolve this grave injustice which has been inflicted on me."

The sacking of the vice-chancellor was announced at a meeting of the Governing Council of UNILAG held at the National Universities Commission in Abuja on Wednesday.

While seven members of the council were said to have voted for the removal of Ogundipe, four voted against it while one of them voted that he should rather be placed on suspension.

The meeting was chaired by the UNILAG Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of its Governing Council, Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN.
