According to the Daily Post, the Nigerian Senate passed a motion on Wednesday mandating all pay television service providers to switch to a pay-per-view model instead of the necessary monthly membership.
Senator Abba Moro of Benue South Senatorial District, in a sponsored motion, criticised the service providers' constant escalation in pricing of various bouquets, which he characterized as exploitative.
"Notes that the leading pay-tv service provider in Nigeria, (MultiChoice Nigeria), informed all DStv compact subscribers on August 22, 2020, to expect a 13.3% price increase to N7,900 beginning September 1, 2020, while the subscription fee for DStv compact plus was increased by 9.5 percent from N10,925 to N12,000, and Premium was increased from N16,200 to N18,400, indicating a 13.6 percent hike," the lawmaker said.
Senator Moro also expressed his displeasure with the fact that the price of various bouquets has been raised yet again without taking into account the financial challenges that customers are facing.
He reminded the upper legislative chamber that Nigerians had responded furiously to the price spike, indicating that parliamentary intervention was required.
Given that pay-tv services are subscription-based television services, which are often delivered via both analogue and digital cable and satellite televisions, he claimed that there was no reason for the price increase.
The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, as well as the Nigerian Communications Commission, were requested to probe the regular price hikes in additional prayers.
