European Parliament Approves Ukraine's EU Candidacy

The European Parliament has accepted Ukraine's bid for membership in the EU.

According to Dailymail, the European Parliament gave Ukraine its approval to join the union in a vote that was supported by a resounding majority of MEPs.

The leaders of the member states will meet in Brussels later today to examine requests to formally grant Ukraine "candidate status" to join the union, according to the report, which came after the EU Parliament gave its assent.

By arguing that any accession procedure is likely to take years, if not decades, several member states had taken steps to prevent Ukraine from joining the EU.

In the days leading up to the summit, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, claimed to have engaged in a "telephone marathon" on behalf of his nation, speaking with 11 European leaders on Wednesday alone.

The European Commission-backed candidacy is widely expected to be approved - but accession to the EU could take decades.

In the #EuropeanParliament we have just voted to call for #Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to be allowed to obtain EU-candidate status.

A majority of MEPs, including myself backed the call. #EPlenary #EUCO #eupol #eudk pic.twitter.com/ueQqSDHUfn
