Federal Government Says Focus Is on Expanding Tax Net, Not Raising Tax Rates

The Federal Government has dismissed claims that it plans to impose higher taxes on Nigerians, explaining that its current objective is to increase the number of individuals and businesses paying taxes rather than raising existing tax rates.

The clarification was made on Thursday by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, during a meeting with a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) at his office in Abuja.

During the meeting, Oyedele commended the institute for launching a National Tax Awareness Day initiative and acknowledged its continued support for the Federal Government's ongoing tax reform programme.

He also encouraged the institute to intensify efforts aimed at educating the public on taxation, noting that many Nigerians still perceive tax payment as merely a way for the government to collect money from citizens.

According to the minister, the administration's main priority is to widen the country's tax base by ensuring that every eligible taxpayer fulfills their civic responsibility, rather than introducing higher tax rates.

“We are still not getting enough revenue from taxes.

“It is not about increasing taxes but making sure that those who are supposed to pay tax pay. We want to promote fairness in tax administration,” he said.
