The Katsina State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker and the dismantling of a four-member armed robbery gang believed to have been operating in Funtua and nearby communities across the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, disclosed that the operations resulted in the recovery of illicit drugs, weapons, stolen property, and cash suspected to be linked to criminal activities.
Sadiq-Aliyu explained that police operatives apprehended a 22-year-old suspect identified as Aliyu Umar, popularly known by the nickname “Makami,” during a targeted raid conducted on May 28 in the Jabiri area of Funtua Local Government Area.
According to the police spokesperson, the operation was carried out following credible intelligence reports that connected the suspect to alleged drug distribution activities within the locality.
Items recovered from the suspect included 38 tablets of Exol, 28 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, as well as a knife.
“The suspect is believed to be a key member of a drug peddling syndicate operating in the area. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
In another operation, officers attached to the Makera Police Division successfully arrested three individuals suspected to be members of an armed robbery syndicate allegedly involved in phone theft, motorcycle stealing, burglary of shops, and other criminal offences.
The suspects were identified as Salim Umar, 24; Yusuf Mustapha, 23; and Gaddafi Idris, 27. They were reportedly arrested on May 21 following actionable intelligence received by the police.
The command stated that a search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of several weapons, including knives, machetes, scissors, and an iron pinch bar. Officers also recovered mobile phones, SIM cards, charms, and an undisclosed sum of cash from the suspects.
Police authorities further stated that investigations are continuing in order to establish the full scope of the suspects’ criminal activities and determine whether they are connected to other offences committed within the area and surrounding communities.
