The Federal Government has revealed plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with uniforms made from Adire fabric as part of a series of reforms being introduced to the scheme.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, during his appearance on Channels Television’s "The Morning Brief", where he outlined some of the government's plans aimed at repositioning the NYSC.
Olawande explained that the proposed switch to Adire forms part of the Federal Government's broader strategy to encourage local manufacturing and ensure that government expenditure contributes directly to the growth of the Nigerian economy.
According to the minister, the new NYSC uniforms will be produced entirely within the country, noting that Adire fabric is already being manufactured in several states across Nigeria, making local production both practical and sustainable.
“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” he said.
He further stated that the initiative is expected to stimulate indigenous businesses, particularly Nigeria's textile industry, while creating greater opportunities for local artisans and manufacturers through increased government patronage.
In addition to the planned uniform replacement, the minister disclosed that the Federal Government is also reviewing the NYSC deployment process. He explained that the reforms will ensure corps members are posted in line with their academic qualifications, professional training and areas of specialization to improve the relevance and impact of the national service programme.
