The United States (US) has issued a warning that Nigerian government officials involved in corrupt practices may face restrictions on obtaining visas.
In a message published on its official X handle on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria stated that fighting corruption has no borders and that accountability extends to high-profile individuals.
“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US Visas,” the Mission said.
In earlier instances, the US has placed visa restrictions on politicians who are alleged to have undermined democratic processes or engaged in malpractice during elections.
The most recent warning arrives at a time when advocates for transparency are raising alarms over accusations of mismanagement of public funds and abuses of office at various levels of government in Nigeria.
Washington underscores that denying entry to corrupt officials forms part of its broader policy aimed at encouraging good governance, promoting accountability, and ensuring respect for the rule of law among its partner countries.
