The governorship candidate of the People's Redemption Party (PRP) in Osun State, Dr. Rasaq Saliu Oyelami Orisunlagba, has declared that the state needs a new direction, promising purposeful leadership focused on healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure, security, employment generation, and women empowerment ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
Orisunlagba made the declaration during a media parley organised by the Osun Online Publishers Association (OOPA) in Osogbo, where he unveiled his development blueprint and urged residents to support the PRP's vision for a prosperous and people-centred administration.
Speaking on the state's political future, the PRP flagbearer acknowledged the efforts of the current administration but maintained that greater progress was possible under a new government. "I was once a governorship candidate, and while the incumbent government has done its best, Osun deserves the best. The time has come for a new government that will be led by the People's Redemption Party," he said.
The medical practitioner identified healthcare as the cornerstone of his proposed administration, pledging to revive primary healthcare centres, strengthen health insurance coverage and position Osun as a destination for quality medical services. "We know how to take care of our people. The people of Osun will use our hospitals, government officials will use our hospitals, and people from other parts of the world will come to Osun for quality medical treatment. We want to reverse the Japa syndrome and make Osun a place of honour and opportunities," he stated.
On healthcare access, he promised compulsory universal health insurance for residents, saying, "Our universal health insurance programme will be compulsory for every resident. We will ensure that nobody is denied access to healthcare because of financial constraints."
Orisunlagba also outlined his "Orisunlagba Tako-Tabo Agenda," which focuses on agriculture, infrastructure, education, employment creation and human capital development. He pledged to reposition the education sector through targeted investments that would nurture future leaders, innovators, scientists and professionals capable of competing globally.
Addressing unemployment, the PRP candidate argued that Nigerian youths are hardworking but often lack adequate opportunities. "Whenever people say Nigerian youths are lazy, I strongly disagree. Look at the young men and women selling goods along the highways from Ilesa to Ikire. They work tirelessly every day. These young people want to work; they do not want to steal. The challenge is that society is not rewarding their hard work adequately," he said.
He further insisted that the forthcoming governorship election would be decided by ideas and public confidence rather than financial strength, stressing that the PRP's message and ideology resonate with ordinary residents. He also pledged to strengthen community policing, promote agro-processing, complete abandoned projects, drive rural development, and make women empowerment a key priority of his administration.
Orisunlagba described himself as "the people's candidate" and contrasted his candidacy with those of other major contenders, whom he alleged were aligned with former governors and political interests. "I am the people’s candidate. The three other contestants – APC, Accord, and ADC – are candidates of former governors," he said, adding that voters must choose between what he called old-order politics and a government driven by the people.
The PRP candidate called on Osun residents to reject godfatherism and support his bid, promising transparent governance, improved local government administration, better healthcare and education systems, job creation and sustainable development. He maintained that the August 15 election offers an opportunity for the people to chart a new course for the state through leadership focused on performance and accountability.
